Signpost

I was playing around with Google Earth last night.

First I located my house on the globe ---it's a little spooky still to be able to zoom in to an aerial photo of North America, then British columbia, then Vancouver Island, and then, you know, my street and my house and practically see the car parked in my neighbour's driveway...

Then, using my house as the starting point, I'd spin the global map and land on a faraway city, somewhere I've travelled to, so I could know how many kilometres away (the shortest route, as the crow flies) that place was.

I'm thinking that building a signpost something like the one pictured above would be an interesting addition to the garden.

The results :

Rome: 9033 km London: 7628 km

Nairobi: 14, 353 km Marrakech: 9055 km

Madrid: 8487 km Paris: 7973 km

Dublin: 7216 km

Also, a little closer to home, Vancouver,BC : 145 km

I think I'd probably include Kathmandu, Nepal (10,915 km) and Varanasi, India(11, 238 km) too because Jeff and I are planning on travelling to those this fall.

Hey, if we painted those last two places on our sign, then we'd almost be obligated to definitely go.... yeah... * mentally cementing vacation plans*

I like that signpost idea. Though, after while, you'll either need more signposts or a much larger pole to hold all the signs of the places you've been.

Maybe two very big poles... one for all points west of you and another on the other side of the garden for all points east of you...

Hi - nice to see you on mine!

I like the signpost; - but when I googled someone who lived near a major airport the security issues re visibility suddenly dawned on me.

Beautiful garden; must give you a great deal of pleasure. I Love gardening in theory but in practice nowadays prefer to visit all the excellent ones in big N Trust houses locally.

I always like to imagine that I could zoom in so much on Google Earth that I would see myself sitting at my laptop.

The sign's a cool idea.

Google earth freaks me out since I lay out in my backyard topless. I keep thinking someone will zoom into that one day! AAAAH

I love this idea...and am salivating with envy at your trips to Nepal and India.

My only solace will be reading your posts about the travels.

One night I was chatting with a fellow blogger on the phone. She lives in Texas. While we were talking, she Google Earthed my house, and I Google Earthed hers.

Talk about a surreal experience!

I want to put one of those signs out on the logging road in front of the village. 350km to the nearest town. You should do it, not many gardens can boast such an ornament.

I like playing with google earth, looking up my house, my family members...but it does freak me out a bit.

Wow! Love the idea of the garden sign and I can certainly see how adding those last two destinations would tell "The Universe" that that's where you're headed next.

I came to you via Blackcrag who had commented on Northwest Ladybug who was linked to by Susan on Slice of Life. Didja get all that?

Anyway, HI NEIGHBOUR! -- 'cause I'm writing from Nanaimo and will be attending NIC this fall for photography. I love the pictures of your garden and the garden itself. Well done!

Just yesterday Pickle and I were watching a program about the Taj Mahal when she turns to me and asked if we could visit there. I told her yes we could when she was a little older. I guess I too am obligated.

Love the signpost idea!
